A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural management.
