Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for the addition additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover many game types, allowing placement for numerous titles.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
